Uxío Novoneyra’s childhood home, in the village of Parada do Courel, has always been an open place for visits: friends, neighbors, and even curious visitors who came to explore the surroundings of the mountains and to meet Uxío himself.
Today, besides being the headquarters of the Foundation, Casa da Fonte is a living and open museum with the aim of continuing to be the center for gathering, reflection, and cultural dynamism for and by Courel, which the poet built throughout his life.
A regular program of guided tours allows visitors to discover the spaces where the poet lived and worked, as well as access his library, archive, and family art collection.
I am cleaning the house of pots and pans cupboards and cupboards without leaving refuse. I am touching the hands of the ancestors...
Os Eidos, 1995
Uxío Novoneyra was born on January 19, 1930, in the family home in Parada, built by his great-grandfather during the Third Carlist War (1872-1876). He spent much of his life there, first with his parents, Manuela Neira and José Novo, and later in the 1970s with his wife Elba Rey and their children, Branca, Uxío, and Arturo, until they moved to Santiago de Compostela in 1983.
Known locally as Casa do Crego or Casa da Fonte, the house is of significant heritage value, a testament to the region’s former rural life dedicated to livestock and subsistence agriculture. It consists of a main house surrounding a courtyard, surrounded by annexes (former wine cellar, carpentry workshop, forge, and barn) and a garden open to the chestnut groves.
During Uxío’s lifetime, the house was always open to his friends. Painters like Reimundo and Antón Patiño, and poets such as Manuel María and María Mariño, frequented it often, while others like Carlos Oroza and his partner Carmen Latorre resided here for extended periods. Their presence left a treasure trove of manuscripts and artworks that now form part of the house’s art collection.
Following the poet’s testamentary wish to leave his legacy to the land of his birth and life, Casa de Parada is now a house of poetry open to the public and culture.
Since 2010, the Uxío Novoneyra Foundation has undertaken restoration work to adapt the space for new uses, respecting and preserving the original construction of floors, walls, lintels, and roofs in the various buildings that make up the house, listed as heritage in the PXOM at the initiative of the Lugo County Council.
In addition to being the Foundation’s headquarters, the house is a living museum and guardian of the archive, library, and family collection, which continues to expand. A program of guided tours throughout the year allows visitors to explore this unique space.
